Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Says Rey and Ren Are Actually “Dual Protagonists”

There might be a lot of questions surrounding Rey's (Daisy Ridley) journey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it seems like the Force-sensitive Jakku orphan isn't the only leading protagonist in the highly anticipated Star Wars sequel trilogy installment.

Sitting down to speak with SciFiNow Magazine( via Sleemo Tumblr), Rian Johnson says that Kylo Ren's arc will also become a focal point in The Force Awakens sequel, going as far as to call Rey and Ren as a dual protagonist in his film.

"I think Rey and Kylo are almost like a dual protagonist. You identify with Rey, but also you identify with Kylo in a way that you never did with Vader. I know I do. Because if these movies are about adolescence, Kylo is that anger of adolescence and that rejection of the parents, and wanting to screw over your dad; and that's something that all of us, to some degree, can identify with. And the idea of there being a bad guy who you identify with as much as you do the protagonist in some way, that's really interesting."

The cast and crew have been talking about the blurred lines between the forces of good and evil in The Last Jedi, and it seems like the film will present its characters in different shades of moral grey.

"It's funny how Adam [Driver, who plays Kylo Ren] talks about it," Ridley added. "He said it's not the difference between good and bad, it's the difference between good and right. Like his character thinks what he's doing is right. He doesn't think he's the big baddie. So the lines get blurred anyway. Good people make bad decisions. Bad people make good decisions. What Rian has done is this wonderful thing of morally questioning people in a way that makes you see them in a more three dimensional way, or just in a way that you haven't seen before."

This is means a lot for the Star Wars franchise, which has since divided right and wrong between The Light side of the Force, and the Dark Side. It's going to be exciting watching Kylo Ren's complexity in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
