Star Wars: The Force Awakens is The First Film in 40 Years Not Directed By Cameron, Lucas, or Spielberg To Top All-Time Domestic Box Office

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the most successful movie in 2015. It has beaten a bunch of box office records, even topping Avatar for the highest domestic gross of all time. There's also a historical meaning to the title of the Box Office Champion.

For the last 40 years, directors James Cameron, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg have snatched the title back and forth. Spielberg's Jaws in 1975 set the record, then Lucas with Star Wars in 1977, then Cameron with Titanic in 1997, and again with Avatar in 2009. And now, J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens tops that list.
