Star Wars: The Force Awakens Smashes Avatar's Domestic Record

The Force is not strong with the Navi.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens just became the #1 all-time in domestic box office, beating Avatar's $760.5 million, Disney announced in an official press release Wednesday night, based on early box office results. J.J. Abrams' film surpassed the record, from 2009, in a total of just 20 days in North American theaters. The film also passed $800 million in international box office today. It took Avatar 336 days to reach that record, and Star Wars has just taken over the box office for the first three weekends and change of its release. I didn't really find this surprising. The Force Awakens now holds over thirty box office records.

The Force Awakens will have one more weekend with 100% coverage in IMAX theaters, so It's likely that the film will get a billion dollars in domestic gross. The next film that would likely take it out of the #1 spot is Kung Fu Panda 3, which will be released on January 29, 2016, but come February, it'll get more competition with genre films like Deadpool, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Zoolander 2, which will all hit in the first two weeks of February.

The all-time world record will be clearer once the film gets released in China on January 9, 2016. The Force Awakens currently has a worldwide gross total of over $1.56 billion. Avatar still holds the worldwide gross record at $2.788 billion. At this rate, The Force Awakens will definitely surpass Avatar's international box office record as well.
