Star Wars TV Show is Still in Broad Strokes Phase

The success of a franchise on the big screen does not necessarily mean immediately adaptation or extension into TV (and vice versa). And fans are seeing this the hard way as ABC's president tempered some hopes when it comes to the expected live-action TV series for Star Wars.

When asked if there a primetime show from the franchise is in development. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, ABC President Channing Dungey had been quick to point out that the idea is still mostly in brainstorming and throwing-ideas-around phase.

"That was sort of a conversation at TCA that got blown way out of proportion. We have had some conversations in general about wanting to find a way to bring something from the Lucas Star Wars Universe to ABC, but that's far into the future. The focus at the moment for Lucas is on the current stuff that they're doing on the film side and then, of course, they do have the stuff that they are doing on XD."

For now, the most we've seen of Star Wars in the movies is via Disney, such as the show Star Wars Rebels. It has recently teased a new season, as well as teasers that some of the creatures seen in the Disney show may even make it to Star Wars Episode VIII.

Not only does it tie in the show neatly into the Star Wars cinematic universe, it also becomes a great touchpoint for fans who want to extend their experience beyond the movies. Even the fairly standalone movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has made references to Star Wars Rebels, enough to make some fans truly feel immersed in a holistic universe.

For now, we have to wait around until a live-action Star Wars series becomes reality. Given the popularity of the franchise, this may be a reality, though we may be forced to wait for a while until we get it.
