Star Wars Rebels Writer Denies Captain Rex’s Return of The Jedi Confirmation

Posting a piece of concept art last Saturday, Star Wars Rebels writer Steven Melching seemingly confirmed an old fan theory suggesting that The Clone Wars' Captain Rex was actually one of the Rebel soldiers that fought in the Battle of Endor in Star Wars: Episode VI –Return of The Jedi.

However, it seems like the writer's backtracking on the "confirmation," cutting off Rex's connection with Return of the Jedi's Nik Sant.

After fans started linking the Star Wars Rebels concept art of Captain Rex to Return of The Jedi's elderly Rebel soldier, Melching started writing down a series of tweets to explain that he didn't mean to have his post serve as an official "confirmation" for the popular Star Wars fan theory.

"Friends, please allow me to clarify my provocative and badly-worded tweet from earlier today. 1/….When Rex was redesigned for his appearance in S2 of REBELS, many people saw a similarity to "Nik Sant" in ROTJ. 2/…. I didn't notice the resemblance until fans pointed it out after the release of the S2 trailer. 3/…Many onthe crew found the resemblance amusing too, but AFAIK it was not an intentional design choice. 4/…In each season most character models change. As the Ghost crew grows closer to the larger Rebellion, their costumes often reflect that. 5/…Rex is clearly wearing some costume pieces that resemble the Rebel Commandos from ROTJ. As a soldier, this makes sense. 6/ So are Rex and Nik Sant one-and-the-same? Truthfully, I do not know the answer. I wish I had made that clear originally. 7/"

Melchin has long since deleted his original Captain Rex concept art post, but a few fans managed to grab a screenshot of the post before it was taken off Twitter. Here's a picture of the controversial concept art in question:

Captain Rex served as an instrumental character in The Clone Wars, and after CT-7567 popped up to help Ezra and the Ghost Crew in Star Wars Rebels, many were eager to connect the clone trooper to the Nik Sant in the Battle of Endor. However, though Melching's refused to confirm the connection, Star Wars Rebels showrunner Dave Filoni's already admitted toying with the idea from time to time. Let's just wait and see what happens. Fans might get there big confirmation when Star Wars Rebels airs its fourth and final season.
