Star Wars Rebels’ Dave Filoni Teases New Alliances, Darth Maul Appearance in Season Two

Star Wars Rebels Season Two is in full swing and the show's executive producer, Dave Filoni, is keeping mum about the future of the crew of the Ghost or the upcoming season's links to The Force Awakens.

But Filoni, who also worked on The Clone Wars, has shared details in terms of the show's technical improvements and creative direction, as well as hints on alliances and a possible Darth Maul appearance.

Speaking with the New York Daily News, Filoni shared:

There were so many things to things to make the audience familiar with in Season 1, but (in Season 2) it's really more in-depth, it's more detailed, in backstory, in visuals. Everything has many more layers to it than we were able to do in Season 1. I think you'll see the animation has gotten better, the lighting has gotten better.

As for how the creative team is planning to develop these Rebels taking on the Empire:

What we find is that different pockets of rebels are trying to fight back against the Empire in different ways and not everybody is on board with a full out war with the Empire.
I mean, this is a people that just had a Clone War for several years. To follow that up immediately with another, on any galactic scale, would be a terrible thing. So it's a growing time for our crew and we mainly stay focused still on our crew and the resistance fighters that are around them.

The executive producer also revealed something that may make fans look forward to the second season even more. Filoni said he aims to top the quality of The Clone Wars season five episode, The Lawless:

CloneWars was at a point where I really felt we were producing pretty much a feature-level thing on a weekly basis, which is very hard thing to do in animation, with the amount of characters, the detail on the sets and the backgrounds.
Eventually, I think it will be possible because animation is a very flexible medium. You can do all kinds of things in it and with the way computers are evolving and real-time rendering. I think it's going to be amazing, what can achieved in the future.

Finally, perhaps the most exciting part of the interview, is Filoni teasing the appearance of Darth Maul. Since Clone Wars left several plotlines unresolved, he spoke of how a resurrected Darth Maul (Sam Witwer) could be fused in Rebels. He said:

It would be great to tell more stories with him. We had more in 'Clone Wars' and some of them we put out in a comic book form (2014's 'Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir'). You never know, he is a great character; we're just very careful which ones we bring in.
What would that be like, for him to meet the rebel group, I mean could they deal with him? I never say never because I brought Maul back and I would have thought that was impossible myself. Once you do that, anything's possible.

Filoni may have not announced indefinitely that the Sith Lord could return, but a trailer for Star Wars Rebels revealed a character who looked uncannily similar to Maul. In addition, Hasbro practically revealed Maul's return already with its new action figures.

However, there's still the possibility of the Sith Lord appearing in Season 3. It's likely that Filoni is keeping information at bay to avoid the spotlight from leaving Ahsoka and Vader's big confrontation in the latest season of the show.

Star Wars Rebels airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on Disney XD.
