Star Wars Novel Shows The Fate of Jar Jar Binks, Star Wars' Most Unpopular Character

Poor Jar Jar Binks. He really can't catch a break. Almost everyone loathed the chatty Gungan when he first appeared in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. A lot of fans actually demanded that he be excised via CGI from the prequels. Now, Star Wars canon through Chuck Wendig's novel Star Wars Aftermath: Empire's End shows his ultimate fate - and it's one that is arguably worse than death.

He loses his seat in the council, his influence, and presumably his wealth. He ends up as a clown who amuses young children for a living. As for the grown-ups, they avoid him like crazy.

Mashable's casual read of the book says that at its end, a little boy encounters this funny-looking alien entertaining other kids. At first, the alien, who fits the description of Jar Jar Binks, hides his obvious sadness by popping his eyes and wiggling his ears. Eventually, he admits quietly to the little boy that his name is Jar Jar Binks - and he has been ostracized by the galaxy for helping the Empire come to power.

If you're wondering how this lightweight managed to accomplish that feat, go back to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Jar Jar Binks was the senator who pushed for the granting of powers to Palpatine's army. It was a turning point that led to the slaughter of the Jedis, the fall of the Republic, and the rise of the Dark Side of the Force.

Jar Jar Binks might not have anticipated the consequences of his actions, but it spelled the death knell for the galaxy. It also caused his fall from grace.

This inglorious, undignified, sad end might not have been what George Lucas had in mind when he first created the character. He even defended Jar Jar Binks after a lot of the fans howled in derision. But those same fans, like the fictional characters who composed the Republic, can take a bit of satisfaction in his unhappy ending.

Spoofs and parodies had given them some fun. But Jar Jar Bink's officially sanctioned exile from the Star Wars universe was what the fans had wanted most of all. Whether it's justice or fan indulgence by Lucasfilms they finally got it after all these years.

Does Jar Jar Binks deserve this cruel fate? Or the fans' hatred? Maybe watching the clip below will help you decide.
