Star Wars Films Ranked According To Female Character’s Amount Of Screen Time

The Star Wars franchise might have its fair share of sassy princesses and elegant female senators, but not all of the films in Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away have given the same amount of attention to its female characters.

Though Star Wars might incorporate more diversity in its films today, things were quite the same back in the day. Now, it looks like a film lecturer has decided to rank all of the films in the franchise according to the amount of screen time given to female characters in the story.

Taking to Twitter, Dr. Rebecca Harrison, a film lecturer at the University of Glasgow, decided to post her list ranking Star Wars films according to how much screen time was given to women. Taking out all of the appearances by male characters in the franchise, Harrison went on to count the number of appearances by female characters.

The University teacher only "counted women with speaking parts because having the ability to say something and contribute to the story and not serving as a visual object is important."

Though it might be a bit disappointing that A New Hope ends up at the very bottom of the list, it barely comes as a surprise. Carrie Fisher's spunky Princess Leia was the only prominent female character in the original Star Wars movie – sure the scene in Tattoine also had Aunt Beru but even then her scenes were extremely short.

Lucasfilm's latest feature, Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently screening in cinemas.
