Star Wars Fans Are More Than Excited To See Doctor Who Star Matt Smith In Episode IX

Lucasfilm might have announced the official cast list for Star Wars: Episode IX last month, but director J.J. Abrams has been adding a number of new faces to the film, including his former collaborators Keri Russell and Dominic Monaghan.

Yesterday, word came out that Abrams also reeled in Doctor Who alum Matt Smith for an undisclosed "key" role in the upcoming sequel trilogy installment, and fans of Eleven have been nothing but excited. Not only has there been a lot of gushing online, but there's been a lot of speculation surrounding Smith's role, with fans' guesses ranging from Rey's (Daisy Ridley) timelord father to a sassy and sexy droid.

Check out some of the tweets that fans have been making online:

There's certainly a whole lot of love and a whole lot of memes about Eleven joining Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away, and while some would desperately want Smith to end up being Rey's estranged father, it's either the English actor is going to play an important First Order officer (Domhnall Gleeson's General Hux does desperately need a friend with Adam Driver's Kylo Ren taking over as Supreme Leader) or a new member of the Resistance ( Carrie Fisher's Leia does need new Resistance members).

Or he could play something entirely else. We'll just have to wait and see.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
