The release date for Star Wars: Episode IX has been pushed from May 24, 2019 to December 20, 2019, Lucasfilm announced today.

This isn't the only big anouncement for Star Wars: Episode IX made today. Earlier today, it was announced that Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams will return to direct the final installment of the new trilogy.

Now, each of the Star Wars Skywalker-saga film has a December release date. The Force Awakens was released on December 18, 2015; The Last Jedi will be released o December 15 this year.

The delay was probably caused by director Colin Trevorrow's departure from the film. It was reported that he was fired for being difficult.

"J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX," Lucasfilm wrote in a statement. "Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm."

Here's what Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said: "With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy."
