Star Wars Episode IX: George Lucas Had Wanted To Direct The Last Star Wars Movie Since The 70s

After the announcement of Colin Trevorrow leaving Star Wars Episode IX, a lot of fans are wondering who Lucasfilm is going to choose to take over the helm. What's funny is, Star Wars creator George Lucas had already pitched himself to direct the last movie of the sequel trilogy back in 1977.

In an interview with Rolling Stone (via GeekTyrant), Lucas had said merely months after the first Star Wars came out:

"I think the sequels will be much, much better. What I want to do is direct the last sequel. I could do the first one and the last one and let everyone else do the ones in between."

A lot of fans who did their research will know that Lucas already planned the prequel and sequel trilogy way back during the time of the originals, but with Disney taking over the reigns of the new Star Wars movies, George Lucas has been asked to step back.

After the sour reception of the prequel trilogy, it's highly doubtful that George Lucas will be asked to direct this last movie. Personally, I think the better choice would be Steven Spielberg. He was originally attached to direct Return of the Jedi, but plans didn't push through back then. Imagine what a Spielberg-helmed Star Wars movie would be like.

The future of Episode IX is still unclear, but we do know that Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
