Star Wars Battlefront II: EA Unsure About Bringing Back Microtransactions

After the lengthy Star Wars Battlefront II debacle, it looks like EA has learned a very valuable lesson when making games in the future. Prior to its release, Battlefront II was plagued with progression walls and a nasty pay-to-win structure, which caused many gamers to revolt. EA listened and have removed microtransactions in the game, for the time being, stating that they would return at a future date.

However, Glixel reported that EA might not bring back microtransactions after all. That is huge, possibly influencing how the company makes future Star Wars titles and video games in general.

During the 37th Nasdaq Investor Conference, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen had this to say:

Clearly, we are very focused on listening to the consumer and understanding what the consumer wants and that's evolving constantly. But we're working on improving the progression system. We turned the microtransactions off as an opportunity to work on the progression system inside the game. We're continuing to do that. I think there's an update this week and again next week. Over time we'll address how we will want to bring the microtransactions either into the game or not and what form we will decide to bring it into.

EA faced a ton of backlash when the ridiculous progression walls were seen during the beta for Battlefront II. While fans tolerate these for free-to-play games, the fact that this title is full-priced and almost required additional payments was something gamers would not take. It looks like the developers are realizing that they were in the wrong and it will be interesting to see what the game's future is like.

Star Wars Battlefront II is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
