Star Wars: A Look At Some Older BB Droid Units

Though R2-D2 is one unique droid, the Star Wars saga was filled with other astromech droids of the same model who had their own stories and personalities. BB-8 was the only BB unit we saw in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but with The Last Jedi, we get to see some older BB models as well.

Though BB-4 and BB-2 work with the Resistance, they won't be the only BBs introduced in the movie. The First Order also has their own BB unit by the name of BB-9E, and he's a black astrodroid with a flat head this time around.

I'm curious as to how involved these droids will be in the movie. The Force Awakens had a lot of info on some side characters who only showed up for a second onscreen. Then again, that's pretty much the charm of Star Wars, to have characters pop up in the movie for a while and have a wide backstory about them behind the scenes—whatever sells more toys.

Regardless, I think whoever designed the BB unit for Star Wars hit a stroke of genius when making an R2-D2 for this generation. George Lucas probably tried to replicate the same success with Jarjar, but look how that turned out.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
