Star Trek: Discovery's Main Character Is Spock's Half-Sister

Star Trek Discovery is confirmed to be a prequel to the original Star Trek starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, but the two series are actually closer than you think. As it turns out, lead character Commander Michael Burnham is the half-sister of everyone's favorite Vulcan, Spock.

This was confirmed at the SDCC (via ScreenRant) where the cast and crew gathered to talk about the show. Commander Burnam was apparently raised on Vulcan by her mother Amanda who was then married to Spock's father, Sarek. It's also worth noting that Sarek also makes an appearance in Discovery, albeit he'll only be in one episode.

With J.J. Abrams successfully rebooting the franchise in movies, Trek has actually been absent from the air since 2005. A lot of people are definitely excited to see Starfleet back on television, but a lot of people are worried that Discovery may end up being too reliant on its connection to the original series. Even Rainn Wilson's character Harry Mudd was a villain in the original Star Trek.

Though some fans may be bashing the series already, it's best everyone just stay positive. For a show about futurists who aim for peace with everyone, the Star Trek fanbase has some overly critical people who start "hating" things before they see it.

So far, we know very little about the main plot of Star Trek: Discovery, but hopefully we get some official descriptions as the release date for the series draws nearer.

Star Trek: Discovery comes out Sept. 24.
