Stan Lee's cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is no secret because he's been appearing in Marvel films since 2000's X-Men. His latest cameo in James Gunn's film confirms a popular fan theory that Marvel fans have been guessing.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT:

The confirmed fan theory claims that Stan Lee isn't just playing some random guy. He's actually playing a character from the comic books. According to the theory, Lee is playing Uatu, who's also known as The Watcher but in human form. Created by Lee and Jack Kirby in the 1960s, Uatu is one of the oldest beings in the Marvel universe, and is a member of an alien species called The Watchers whose purpose in life is simply to record the activity in the universe, and Uatu is assigned to Earth and the rest of our solar system. Although Uatu is a powerful being, his kind has vowed not to interfere with the natural flow of the universe's events.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Stan Lee is seen on the moon while wearing a retro-style space suit, and he's talking to three other Watchers about his experience. Lee's charactertells the Watchers about the time he went to Eearth as a Fedesral Express Agent. This part of the dialogue confirms that he's taking on different roles as The Watcher to observe the events happening the Marvel universe. This is the perfect role for someone who helped build the universe, and I love how this explains why he appears in various Marvel films across different franchises.
