Square Enix Wants A Final Fantasy VIII Remake

In recent years, Square Enix has kept itself busy by remastering classic installments of the Final Fantasy franchise. The latest in of these re-releases is Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. It's also the last in the franchise that was originally released for the Playstation 2 console.

During a recent interview with International Business Times, game director Takashi Katano suggested that remastering every classic Final Fantasy game from the first Playstation console would be an injustice. This could mean that Square Enix would need to sacrifice quality standards that they hold so dear.

Doing so would mean sacrificing quality standards that the studio holds very dear. If Square Enix does decide to re-release a Final Fantasy title from that era, it would certainly be a complete remake and not a remaster. If the studio plans to re-release a title from that era, it would be a remake, not a remaster.

"You look at the other titles in the series and technologically anything before the PS2 era is going to be difficult to do a modern remaster of to a suitable level of quality…that means a [future game] is more likely to be a remake," Katano explained.

As much as I'm excited to play the Final Fantasy VII Remake, I'm more hyped to play the remake of Final Fantasy VIII, my favorite in the franchise, and the one that inspired me to write epic fantasy when I was a kid. Final Fantasy VI and IX are good contenders to get remakes but VIII will probably get it first if Square decides do it in chronological order since Final Fantasy VII remake is already in development.

The reception from the E3 announcement in 2015 has been positive, so Square Enix probably had to rethink its approach to re-releasing games. Final Fantasy VIII definitely deserves a remake, and we won't have to wait over a decade for it.
