A lot of people are excited for the release of Bong Joon-ho's Okja later this June, but it looks like the movie is having problems with its director's home country of South Korea. As it turns out several movie theaters are planning to boycott the movie once it comes out.
According to Korea Times, the reason for doing so is because Okja will be releasing on Netflix on the same day that it comes out in theaters. Theater owners think that the best move would be for Netflix to delay the release of the movie by three weeks in order to let more people try and catch Okja on the big screen.
Personally, I'm getting so hyped up for the movie that I would much rather see it on the big screen as compared to my laptop here at home. The story just looks so intriguing and heartfelt that it feels like it deserves a visit to the theater.
It's odd considering that Bong Joon-ho's own country is looking to boycott his movie. He's probably one of the hottest Korean directors right now, being the guy behind the 2013 hit, Snowpiercer.
Some theaters are planning to have a later release date for Okja instead, and some have opted to wait out the decisions of the other bigger theaters before planning to make a move. Hopefully, a lot of people get to see the film though, because it looks so damn stunning.
Okja comes out on Netflix June 28.
