Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey Turns Full Phoenix In New Cover For EW; Story Details Revealed

Bryan Singer has bowed out of the X-Men franchise with X-Men: Apocalypse, and now Simon Kinberg is sitting in the director's chair for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The movie is still set to come out later next year, but we now have a new look at Sophie Turner as Jean Grey a.k.a. Phoenix.

Check it out:

We also have some official details from the movie thanks to Entertainment Weekly:

Set in 1992, about 10 years after the events of last year's X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix opens with the X-Men, including Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), in a new, unexpected role: national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) even lands on the cover of Time magazine. But his growing ego puts the team at risk.

"Pride is starting to get the better of him, and he is pushing the X-Men to more extreme missions," Kinberg says. After they're dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean (Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner)— the Phoenix.

After Brett Ratner tried to adapt the Dark Phoenix storyline for X-Men 3: The Last Stand, fans are hopeful that Kinberg will bring something different to the table this time around. Apocalypse was met with a mediocre reception, and being someone who has followed the X-men since 2000, I'm honestly getting tired of this messed up timeline that Singer has given us. Am I supposed to believe that McAvoy is already close to 60 here? And isn't Beast supposed to be in his 40s?

With Disney's upcoming acquisition of Fox, I'm hoping Marvel Studios has a perfect solution for bringing the X-Men into the MCU. I'm glad if they would reboot the entire franchise, but they should just keep Deadpool the way it is. Ryan Reynolds has knocked it out of the park, and I don't want anyone else in the role.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix comes out Nov. 2, 2018.
