A Venom spin-off was announced by Sony back when they were still riding on The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, but with Tom Holland now the new Peter Parker, fans were wondering if the studio had given up on all their announced spin-offs. Apparently, the projects are still a go, with a director and release date officially announced for Venom.

Exhibitor Relations has reported that Alex Kurtzman, writer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will be the one helming Venom. Kurtzman may be more of a writer if you look at his resume (Mission Impossible III, Star Trek 2009, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), but his most recent directorial work will be the Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise.

Following the news of Aquaman being delayed to Christmas of 2018, Venom has now taken the original release date of that film — Oct. 5, 2018.

What's interesting is that the movie will be released after The Avengers: Infinity War, and since the alien symbiote comes from outer space in the comics, it's possible that it could be introduced in Infinity War. If that were the case, does this also mean we get to see black suit Spider-Man? I certainly hope so.

Hopefully Sony is still working closely with Marvel when it comes to developing Venom. It would just be ridiculous if the movie was still based on TAS Universe and not the MCU. We all know this will eventually lead to a Spider-Man vs. Venom movie down the line.

Venom is slated for a release on Oct. 5, 2018.
