Sony's Animated Spider-Man Film Finds Its Director, Writers Promise 'Unique Filmgoing Experience'

Sony Pictues is getting ready to begin production on its upcoming animated Spider-Man film, which will not be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While story details are still being kept under wraps, THR reports that the film will be directed by Bob Persichetti, and it be his first feature film. Persichetti has worked on various animated films as head of story, and a couple of those are The Little Prince and Puss in Boots.

According to THR, the script for the film was penned by Phil Lord, half of the writing/directing duo behind The LEGO Movie and the Jump Street films. His partner Chris Miller is producing for the film with Avi Arad and Amy Pascal.

Lord and Miller are planning to make the animated film stand out from previous Spider-Man films. During an interview with IGN, Miller teased what the animated will be like, and he said that it will be ulike anything fans have seen from the web-crawler to date.

Miller: "It is not going to feel like every other Spider-Man movie you've seen. It will stand on its own as a unique filmgoing experience."
Lord: "It's wonderful and the people that are working on it are geniuses. It is unique. … People will love it."

The animated Spider-Man film will be the seventh one that Sony is producing since it acquired rights to the character from Marvel. The film is rumored to tell the story of the other Spider-Man character, Miles Morales, but Sony hasn't confirmed yet.

The film is set to release on December 21, 2018.
