Sony has a ‘Phonebook-Sized’ Roster of Spider-Man Characters to Build Their Own Cinematic Universe

A lot of people rejoiced when Spider-Man was shared with the MCU, but Sony still looks to be building their own cinematic universe apart from Marvel. Writer/Director Emily Carmichael has actually met with Sony about the Silver & Black, and confirms that Sony actually has enough IP to build off their own franchise.

Talking to Vulture, Carmichael had this to say about Sony's Spider-Man spinoff plans:

"I was one of the directors called in to pitch on Silver & Black… At one of my early meetings on the project I got a peek at the phonebook-sized compendium of characters Sony has the rights to, all characters tangentially related to Spider-Man. It's a cinematic universe, all right."

For now, Silver & Black —a movie centered on Silver Sable and Black Cat—has been pulled from its original release date, but is still in development under the helm of Gina Prince-Bythewood. No one is really expecting much from this movie, but I guess that just gives the filmmakers the freedom to make it whatever they want.

Though Sony does have a ton of characters to work with, a lot of fans can't help but express their frustrations at the studio for seemingly spinning off Spider-Man characters without the chance of Spider-Man even meeting up with them.

Hopefully all of this will make sense in the end.

The first Sony Spider-Man spinoff is Venom, and it's set for a release on Oct. 5.
