Solo Writer Says Millennium Falcons New Look Is Because It’s Lando’s Party Ship

Star Wars fans were a bit surprised seeing how the Millennium Falcon in the various previews for Solo: A Star Wars Story seemed quite different from the Falcon they've gotten used to. Not only does the Falcon seem much cleaner than it usually is, it also has a more full-bodied shape in the trailers for Solo.

Sitting down to speak with Entertainment Weekly, Solo writer Jon Kasdan explains why the ship seems so different from the YT-1300 light freighter that they've come to know in the Star Wars franchise. Not only is the ship still free of the special modifications Han (Alden Ehrenreich) made to it before Star Wars: A New Hope, but it's also still under the ownership of Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), one of the most suave gamblers in the galaxy.

"Where Han gave it a certain shabby coolness and a dinged up quality that reflected where he was at that point in his life, this Falcon reflects its owner very clearly in its shape and aesthetic and his needs, even if those needs be a little more space to entertain," Kasdan said.

According to Jon, he and father Lawrence Kasdan (co-writer of the film), had always felt that it was important the Falcon's image would represent its current owner.

"One of the things Larry and I had talked about was the Falcon should always reflect the personality of its captain," he said.

It would make sense that the Falcon would be much cleaner in Lando's care, given the smuggler's preferences and needs. We can't wait to be invited to Lando's party when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres on May 25, 2018.
