Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Big Cameo Appearance Even Wasn’t Named In The Film’s Script

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The Star Wars franchise might be littered with great cameos and appearances, but fans had no idea that they were going to see Darth Maul return to the big screen in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Sure there was a lot of speculation going around saying that Boba Fett and Jabba would pop up in Lucasfilm's Star Wars spinoff, but not a word about Darth Maul. And all thanks to the secrecy Lucasfilm placed on Maul's scenes.

Speaking in an interview with Variety,Solo screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan decided to open about the lengths that they took to keep Maul's appearance in the film a secret from the fanbase. The father-son duo was so careful, they even refused to write Maul's name in the script.

"It was never specifically named in the script. It just said, ‘A character too secret to ever name.' Everyone did a great job of keeping it secret, and Ray was such a delight," the screenwriters told the publication.

Keeping Darth Maul's an appearance in Solo a secret from everyone was probably a smart decision by the Kasdans. We live in an age where fans get their hands on anything and keeping Maul's name off the script actually helped keep the cameo from spilling out to the public.

Still, we're not quite sure why the Kasdans would have had Maul at the center of the Crimson Dawn in the film when the character was working alone in the Star Wars animated series, Star Wars Rebels.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently screening in cinemas.
