Solo: A Star Wars Story Writers Discuss Creating Han and Chewie's First Meeting

Solo: A Star Wars Story has to be one of the more interesting prequels coming out since it will be showing us many "firsts" for the franchise. One of these "firsts" that fans weren't immediately expecting due to the trailers was how Han Solo ended up meeting Chewbacca. Anyone who has to try writing this encounter might have been in trouble but thankfully, the film has a Star Wars veteran as one of the writers.

Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan were given the unenviable task of writing this encounter so the two were very careful when making this encounter. That's why it was really smart of these two to start them off at odds, which is the way most cinematic friendships start.

"It all really evolved in the writing process. When Larry brought me into this process with him he said ‘The relationship between Han and Chewie is a romance and it's going to be a romance in the great tradition of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn movies. You're going to feel that kind of delight by the end of it.' And so it was sort of foregone that when they started they would be at odds."

Spoilers

For those unaware, the two characters are pitted against each other when has Han thrown in a dungeon to fight a "monster" in a homage to Return of The Jedi. This monster ends up being Chewie and before we know it, these two eventually team up.

Interestingly enough, The Kasdans made sure to shoot this scene really early as it was the first scene shot when the movie entered production. Apparently, both Alden Ehrenreich and Joonas Suotamo have been working out non stop for this film, so knowing that this was their first scene must have been interesting.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is now showing in theaters.
