Solo: A Star Wars Story Gives Han’s Name A Heartbreaking Origin Story

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story

As an origin movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story gives answers to the questions fans have been asking ever since they first got to meet the smuggler in Star Wars: A New Hope. In Solo, we get to learn whether Han really is the type to shoot first, what it was like when Han first met Chewie, and how exactly the smuggler wins the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian in a game of Sabacc.

We even get to know the origin of Han's name (via CBR). Though fans never really questioned whether Solo was Han's actual last name, Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars spinoff lets fans know that Solo is actually a name given to Han after he manages to get off Corellia.

After Han and his lover Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) manages to run away from the syndicate that has them shackled to a life of poverty, the two manage to reach the spaceport with a group of thugs hot on their trail. However, while Han and Qi'ra are able to enter the gate after bribing an Imperial Officer with hyper fuel, the thugs snatch Qi'ra away just before the gate closes. Though Han tries to reach out to his lover, Qi'ra begs him to save himself, and Han is forced to escape.

In the other side of the gate, Han finds himself in trouble again. Stormtroopers are checking passengers identification before they can board ships, and Han, who doesn't have any, makes the decision to enlist at an Imperial recruitment desk instead.

When the recruitment officer asks for his last name, "Who are your people," a down-on-his-luck Han answers, "I'm alone. I don't have people."

After giving the name some thought, the officer inputs Solo.

Though nobody really wondered whether Han's last name was actually his (or whether he gave the name to himself), the origin of the smuggler's last name is a bit heartbreaking. Wouldn't your heart break a little, losing your partner and being reminded that you're all alone with the name Solo?

Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently screening in cinemas.
