A new X-Men movie is on the way and Simon Kinberg is in talks to write and direct it, Collider reports. Kinberg has previously written the X-men movies The Last Stand, Days of the Future Past and Apocalypse. He's also written for Star Wars: Rebels and Shelock Holmes.
The seventh X-Men movie will reportedly be titled X-Men: Supernova. The movie will apparently focus on Jean Grey and adapt the famous Dark Phoenix storyline from the X-Men comics. This was previously loosely adapted in X-Men: The Last Stand, but it...didn't go over well with fans, to say the least.
If Kinberg does get the job, this will be his directorial debut. He has already completed the script for X-Men: Supernova but the studio is still undecided on whether to use it. However, if he becomes director, it seems likely his script would be used.
Kinberg has a lot of production credits with X-Men properties as well. He's been involved with Deadpool, Logan, Legion and more. If the movie goes through, it also seems likes Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner will reprise her role as Jean Grey.
It may seem risky to put someone who's never directed for in charge of the movie, but it can't be denied Kinberg is familiar with the movies. He's written works both well-recieved and not-so-well-recieved and pulling off Supernova could be his redemption after the disaster that was the Last Stand's take on the Phoenix storyline.
