Shazam Casts It Star For Major Supporting Role

DC's Shazam is continuing to gain momentum on the road to filming, as a major casting has been announced. According to Deadline, Jack Dylan Grazer from It has been cast as Freddy, Billy Batson's best friend who knows his thunderous secret. This is pretty big news for fans of classic and modern Shazam since Freddy has always been a vital part of the character's mythos.

Whether the comics were called Shazam or Captain Marvel, the character always had a friend in Freddy Freeman. The character has switched from supporting cast member to Captain Marvel Jr, superhero in training. At one point in time, the wizard Shazam was killed and Freeman actually took up the role of Captain Marvel after Batson was forced to take the wizard's place in the Rock of Eternity.

The most recent version of the character debuted during Geoff Johns' stint with Shazam. This new version of Freeman is one of Batson's many adopted siblings and needs crutches to walk but is also a bit of a thief, stealing Billy's wallet early on. He does end up becoming close with Billy, eventually returning the wallet and being one of the first people to find out he had powers.

Grazer impressed many viewers with It, so he should do well here. He joins Asher Angel (Billy Batson) and Zachary Levi (Shazam) in David Sandberg's 2019 DCEU film.

Shazam hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
