The entertainment industry has been battling online piracy for years, getting little victories over the pirates from time to time (RIP Kickass Torrents). Now several major companies are announcing the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment or ACE, and their sole mission is to battle online piracy and stop the theft of creative content.
Companies that have joined up with ACE include industry giants like Twentieth Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, and NBC Universal. Streaming sites like Netflix, HBO, Amazon, CBS, and Hulu are also on board, as well as international companies like Bell Media and BBC Worldwide.
With piracy seriously troubling the music and porn industry, movies have not been hit so hard because for one, not everyone knows how to download them, and two, movie files are simply too large to download regularly on a browser. This huge alliance, however, has the help of every major player in the industry. As Barbossa said, "There's not been a gathering like this in our lifetime."
It's funny, because, you know, pirates.
As of now, we don't know about ACE's first move, but online pirates should be weary the next time they try to download or upload anything that isn't theirs.
