Settlers Of Catan Is Getting A Movie From Sony

With films like The Emoji Movie and The LEGO Movie coming out, it seems that Hollywood is willing to adapt anything they think can gain an audience. As it turns out, Sony is now planning a movie based on the massively popular board game, Settlers of Catan.

According to Variety, the movie will be produced by Gail Katz (Air Force One, A Perfect Storm) who acquired the rights for the film back in 2015. Dan Lin (The LEGO Movie, IT) will also be joining her team as well as John Eirich; they'll be working on a script by Blaise Hemingway.

Katz also comments:

"We're excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life. As huge fans of the game, we're struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire. It's not every day that you have the opportunity to work in a world beloved by millions of people, and expand its story for the screen."

Since the game doesn't really have any main characters or fantastical elements, I'm very curious on how a movie will be pulled out of a concept like Catan. It's a German board game which has players compete in forming civilizations and building roads. Personally I think most of the fun is in the gameplay and not really the world, but if they can make a full-length movie about emojis, someone will probably pull out something decent with Settlers of Catan.

Maybe it will be like a Jumanji movie where players are sucked into the board game? What do I know.

If you haven't heard of Settlers, there's a good chance that you've encountered it in some TV shows. The game has made an appearance in Parks and Recreation as well as The Big Bang Theory, and it even gets a mention in the last season of BoJack Horseman.

No official release date has been announced for Settlers of Catan.
