Disney is currently working on several live-action adaptations of several of their properties including Dumbo, The Lion King, and Aladdin. Sam Mendes was originally set to direct the remake of Pinocchio, but it looks like Disney will have to find someone else.
According to THR, the Skyfall director has chosen to exit the project after he was said to have had talks earlier this year. Mendes was also attached to a remake of James and the Giant Peach, but he was said to have left this project to pursue Pinocchio.
The script for Pinocchio is said to have been provided by Chris Weitz who made the script for the live-action Cinderella adaptation as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Weitz's production company, Depth of Field, was also attached to produce the movie.
With Mendes exiting, some people are thinking that he's doing so to work on Bond 25, a project which is yet to have a director. Blade Runner 2049's Denis Villenueve was previously in talks for that project, but he chose to exit to work on a live-action adaptation of Dune.
No official release date has been set for Pinocchio but chances are, if Disney finds a replacement for Mendes quickly, it comes out in 2019.
