Ryan Reynolds Explains How Pop Culture Jabs Are Picked In Deadpool 2

Deadpool's always been fond of breaking the fourth wall, and fans love it when the Merc with a Mouth makes a good pop culture reference. However, while viewers all love the little jabs Deadpool makes at Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and the DC Extended Universe, Ryan Reynolds says that picking out the pop culture reference isn't all that easy.

Deadpool 2 just recently got its home release, and co-writer Paul Wernick and leading star Ryan Reynolds were present in the audio commentary of the film's Super Duper Cut. In Deadpool 2's bonus feature (via ComicBook.com), Reynolds was asked to break down the creative process of inserting pop culture references into the dialogue of the movie.

"Yeah, you want them sprinkled throughout the movie," Reynolds said. "You don't wanna overdo, though, either, and you try to wanna find stuff that's not, you know, as you guys know, that's not just of the moment and out the next second. Sometimes they're just off the cuff, and we just fucking roll with it. I love that Deadpool's so invested in pop culture and drags it into every scene he can."

Reynolds gives this explanation while viewers are being introduced to Firefist, the young character played by indie darling Julian Dennison, the lead star in Marvel director Taika Waititi's film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. During the scene, fans get to see Deadpool snickering over Firefist who calls Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) "Justin Bieber." That's not the only pop culture jab in the film – Deadpool makes a reference whenever he can, making fun of Marvel, Thanos, Frozen and the DCEU.

There's a lot to love about the Merc with a Mouth's irreverent humor, really.

Deadpool 2 is currently available on Digital HD.
