Russos Confirm Steve Rogers is No Longer Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War

Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo will begin production on Avengers: Infinity War later this year, and it will be shot back-to-back with another untitled Avengers film. They haven't confirmed any cast members yet, but the directors have teased that these films will unite the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, with most fans assuming that all of the previously introduced MCU characters will appear at some point.

With Captain America: Civil War releasing on Digital HD on September 2, the Russo brothers have been making the press rounds, and now they just confirmed that Chris Evans' Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America.

This isn't really surprising to those who have seen Captain America: Civil War. Near the end of Civil War, after the intense one-on-one fight betweeen Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Cap drops his iconic shield and we never see him pick it up again.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, the Russo brothers confirmed that Steve Rogers is dropping the Captain America identity:

"I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It's] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain Americawas in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making."

Of course, that doesn't mean that Steve Rogers won't show up in Infinity War. Writer Christopher Markus said that Steve Rogers will still be "helpful" in bringing down the Mad Titan, Thanos (Josh Brolin). Many fans are speculating that Steve Rogers could turn into The Nomad, which happens in the Marvel Comics after Cap becomes disillusioned with the government, which happened in Civil War.

Avengers: Infinity War will hit theaters on May 4, 2018. The untitled Avengers film is set to release on May 3, 2019.
