Ron Howard Says Solo: A Star Wars Story is Han's 'Rite of Passage'

Solo: A Star Wars Story will show how Han became the person with met in A New Hope, but also how he built his reputation as a famous smuggler. According to director Ron Howard, the standalone film depict a rite of passage for Solo.

Howard, who took over as the Solo director after Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the project, recently talked to EW about the upcoming film. He talked a bit about what fans can expect from the next Star Wars anthology film. When he started talking about Han's young personality, Howard says that the film would be Han's rite of passage.

"It really is a rite of passage," Howard said. "The story sends him on an unexpected journey that hurtles him into a dangerous world surrounded by charismatic but lawless characters. And that's where he needs to try to make his way and gain his freedom. So, so much of this is about trying to satisfy that yearning to really be free, to really call his own shots in a very lawless part of the galaxy and at a time when it was wide-open."

As we've seen in the trailers, the young Han looks more optimistic than the smuggler he's become. Solo will probably have a dark outcome for him to have a negative outlook at the worlds around him.
