Rogue One is by far, one dark Star Wars movie; so dark that fans wouldn't believe that Disney would allow so many key moments to happen. Writer Gary Whitta himself was actually amazed at what they were able to do with the movie, and he talks about what was going down behind the scenes.
In an interview with ComicBook, Whitta talks about the ending of the movie where literally everybody died. He says:
"I never believed that they would let us kill off all the characters in the film… That was our original instinct. The very first meeting with Gareth I remember saying, ‘I kind of feel like they all need to die, but there's no way Lucas ... There's no way Disney'll let us do that. We can't kill everybody. It's a Disney movie.' And yet, they were fully supportive of it, and it's actually one of the coolest things about the film."
Whitta then talks about the first draft of the script that was originally supposed to have Jyn (Felicity Jones) live, but he and Edwards thought that the movie would definitely end better by the team making the ultimate sacrifice.
Whitta added:
"It was kind of okay that they died, because they completed the mission…They die so that the whole Star Wars franchise can live, basically."
Rogue One is absolutely one of my favorite Star Wars movies to date. Though I thought Force Awakens was amazing, I never realized how much more I could've loved it had it not been for the release of Rogue One. I really hope they would let Gareth Edwards come back for another go; possibly a Darth Vader spin-off movie?
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits digital HD on March 24, and the Blu-Ray/DVD comes out on April 4.
