Rogue One Reshoots Rumors: J.J. Abrams Involvement, “40%” of Film Being Shot & More

Update: Christopher McQuarrie has denied any involvement in the supervision of the reshoots.

The screenwriter told Slash Film the following:

If there are any reshoots on Rogue One, I'm not supervising them. For any outlet to say so is not only wrong, it's irresponsible. Gareth Edwards is a talented filmmaker who deserves the benefit of the doubt. Making a film – let alone a Star Wars chapter – is hard enough without the internet trying to deliberately downgrade one's years of hard work. Who does that even serve? Let him make his movie in peace.

Original Report:

More details of the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reshoots have allegedly been revealed.

This week saw headlines on the Gareth Edwards film dominating multiple media outlets. It began with news of the film having to undergo weeks of "expensive" reshoots since Disney execs didn't like the first cut of the film. After that, more details eventually emerged about the reasons for the said changes, with sources claiming that they are because of the movie's "tone" not matching that of previously released Star Wars films. Then yesterday, a rumor popped up saying that part of the reshoots involve a young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) cameo.

Well, there's another set of new speculations regarding the much-talked about reshoots, and they involve some pretty specific details. They come from the website Making Star Wars, which has proven to be reliable in the past.

Here are the rumored details from MSW:

> Some crew initially heard J.J. Abrams was supervising the reshoots.
> Gareth Edwards is doing the reshoots himself but with a partner, Christopher McQuarrie.
> Christopher McQuarrie, the final writer on Rogue One will be working extensively with Edwards onset to make sure they're on the "same page" with the most recent draft of the film.
> Christopher McQuarrie's draft of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was considered superior to the film they shot previously.
> It was not Edwards' fault as McQuarrie's draft wasn't completed when much of the film was shot and revisions kept coming in that made the film feel uneven.
> 32 sets have been recreated for the reshoot.
> The crew expects they are reshooting 40% of the film.
> They are working 6 days a week for 8 weeks.

Early reports made it appear as if the film is horrible since Disney allegedly went in "crisis" mode after execs became disappointed with the first cut. Now, these new details offer some slight reprieve. They don't appear that bad as compared to those reports early this week.

From what we can gather with these new details, it appears that the script wasn't ready before production began, and there seems to have been some confusion among the writers and Edwards. In addition, there's three writers working on the movie, so there's bound to be some miscommunication along the way. That said, it's common for films to undergo reshoots. What probably concerned fans is that these changes are being made late in production.

Nevertheless, I'm sure Disney and the Rogue One makers are completely aware of what they're doing, and if those rumors are true that execs want a less gritty Rogue One, I'm hoping a "darker" version will be made available at least when the DVD/Blu-ray versions are released, kind of like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's Ultimate Edition.

Movie Synopsis:

Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule.
