Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is just the first of the spin-off films that Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to release, and while it may be set in a time period familiar to Star Wars fans, Rogue One might have one major change compared to the other seven films. As part of EW's coverage of the movie, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked about one part of the saga films that might not make it in Rogue One: the iconic opening crawl.
"The [opening] crawl and some of those elements live so specifically within the ‘saga' films that we are having a lot of discussion about what will define the [stand-alone] ‘Star Wars' stories separate and apart from the saga films," said Kathleen Kennedy. "So we're right in the middle of talking about that."
Ever since the first Star Wars film in 1977, the opening crawls have introduced each episode's story. It would make sense if they end up removing the crawl since while the film is set before the events of Episode IV, it can't be called "Episode III" in the crawl as 2005's Revenge of the Sith is already known for that.
Kennedy went on to discuss another stylistic difference in Rogue One: "He [director Gareth Edwards] does a lot of handheld, intimate, close-up work. That's not something you've necessarily seen in a Star Wars movie before," Kennedy said. "And we brought in [cinematographer] Greig Fraser, to shoot it, who had done Zero Dark Thirty. So a combination of Greig and Gareth…just gives it a really unique style."
