Ridley Scott Wants To Make A Franchise Out Of Blade Runner Just Like Alien

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner may not have done so well when it released back in 1982, however the neo-noir science fiction film gained a pretty strong cult following over time, so much so that the film's earned itself a sequel.

With Blade Runner 2049 set to release in the next few months, it seems like Scott has the idea of expanding the series even further by turning Blade Runner into a franchise. Speaking in an interview with IGN a few days ahead of the 35^thBlade Runner anniversary this weekend, Scott expresses interest in creating a franchise out of the science fiction film series.

"Yes. I think that, you know what, George has always proved that. Of course there's always something. George Lucas. You know, and the way he's handled Star Wars has been spectacular. It's what I've been trying to do to really evolve Alien, because in those days I wasn't into making sequels, but now suddenly you realize, ‘Well, that's stupid.' I'll use the word ‘duh' again, right? You'd better get into sequels, duh. So, that's in a way what I've been doing."

This doesn't come as a surprise – after all, Scott did manage to make a strong franchise out of Alien and he clearly wants to do the same for Blade Runner. With a wide universe to explore, it isn't impossible either. This expansion however rests on Blade Runner 2049's success, so fans will have to wait and see.

Blade Runner 2049 makes its way to the big screen on October 6, 2017.
