Ridley Scott Disses On Neill Blomkamp's Alien Movie

A few years ago, we got word that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp was working on a sequel to the Alien franchise which would have done away with Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection , aiming to "properly finish" Ripley's story. Ridley Scott, director of Alien: Covenant and the first Alien movie, has apparently dissed on Blomkamp's project and crushes anybody's hopes on getting a Blomkamp-helmed Alien movie.

In an interview with Allocine (translated by Screen Rant), Scott says:

"I don't think it will ever see the light of day. There was never a script — just an idea that evolved from a dozen or so pages. I had to participate as producer, but it didn't go farther because Fox decided it didn't want to do it. As far I was concerned, I had already done Prometheus and I was working on Covenant."

Blomkamp's idea would have Ripley return, as well as a scarred Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) and an adult Newt (Carrie Henn). With Scott working on Alien: Covenant however, Blomkamp had to put this project on hold. Here's his Tweet from 2015:

I think it's a damn shame that Scott doesn't seem enthusiastic about letting Blomkamp try his hand on the franchise. Sure, Blomkamp's latest movies like Elysium and Chappie haven't been critical hits, but his directing style and mastery of visuals is something that would be interesting should it be brought to Alien. Plus, I think it's rather scary that Scott is planning to pump out six more Alien movies by himself; talk about franchise fatigue.

Alien: Covenant hits theaters May 19.
