Rick and Morty fans have been impatiently waiting for Adult Swim to announce the release date of the third season of the cheeky and highly improvisational science fiction animated series ever since its creators, Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon announced that it would come out sometime in 2016. The year has come and gone, yet there's still no word on a release date for Rick and Morty season 3.

However, it seems like fans finally have an update on the highly anticipated season. One of the Rick and Morty staff writers, Mike McMahan, took to Twitter today to share an image of season 3's first episode and this is what he wrote for a caption:

"Hey @RickandMorty am I allowed to say we're recording episode 301 today?"

While Rick and Morty's third season has long been written out by Harmon and Roiland's team, the creatives have been waiting on the animation team to finish the new episodes. Though it's been taking quite a while, it's good to hear that the process of creating the new season has moved on to recording. Let's hope that this means we'll get to see Rick and Morty season 3 soon.

Before that, check out the Rick and Morty season 3 opening that Adult Swim Australia shared earlier this week.
