Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Won't Be Covering The Old Republic Era

It seems that Lucasfilm is very happy with what Rian Johnson has done with The Last Jedi, going so far as to give him his own trilogy to start. He promises that it will touch a corner of the galaxy that has never been covered before, and it looks like he means it.

Some people were guessing that his trilogy would take place way before the prequels during the time of the Old Republic, and as Johnson tells Mashable, that is not the case. He says:

"Oh, [the fans] love Knights of the Old Republic. I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it. Yeah, that's a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you've already seen. To me, what's really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell?"

With that being the case, the trilogy could take place in the very far future, but seeing as that has also been covered in the comics (and the fact that it could close doors for more stories set in the current timeline), Johnson may be referring to something else entirely.

Are we going to stay in the current timeline, but just somewhere far away where the Skywalkers can't affect the galaxy? Frankly I'm happy nobody has been able to guess. It looks like we'll just really have to wait with what Johnson comes up with when it's ready to be announced.

Johnson's trilogy is set to come out after Star Wars Episode IX, so we could be looking at a release date after 2020. Granted, Johnson will have a lot of time to prepare something spectacular.

Catch Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters Dec. 15.
