Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) might fight for different sides of the Force, however the Force-sensitive Jakku orphan and the leader of the Knights of Ren shared quite a number of moments in Star Wars: The Last Jedi because of a connection through the Force.

Speaking in an interview with People,The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson discusses the importance of the shared scenes between Rey and Ren, saying that he and his team went to great lengths to make sure that the connection shared between the two resonate deeply with the film's audience.

"For those force connections, I needed them to talk. And I thought that the hardest thing that Rey could possibly be faced with is being forced to talk to this person that she completely despises. And also the audience, we hate him coming into it. She had to be our proxy and so that's why in those first few conversations, she is just spitting in his face."

The potential romance between the two characters puts an interesting spin on the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Though the tension between Rey and Ren could be clearly felt in The Last Jedi, the two ended up separating ways because of the ideological differences. Now that Ren has assumed his position as Supreme Leader of the First Order, fans wonder what might become of the blossoming romance between Rey and Ben Solo. Can Ben still be redeemed? Let's wait and see.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
