Rian Johnson Shares New Details About Chewbacca & Maz Kanata's Roles in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Fans have been wondering how Chewbacca will deal with deal with his emotions in Star Wars: The Last Jedi after witnessing the murder of his friend in The Force Awakens. It would make sense if he turns out to be depressed in the sequel but it doesn't sound like it will be the case for the Wookiee.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Rian Johnson addressed how Han's death will play a key role in Rey's motivations in The Last Jedi, and also confirmed that Chewbacca isn't over his best friend's death:

"Chewie's doing all right. It's tough. It was obviously a big loss for him, but, you know, he's Chewie. He's resilient. He's got broad Wookiee shoulders, and he also has a new mission. He's got Rey, and she's someone that Han, to a certain extent, handed the keys to. So I think that that helps."

It sounds like Chewie won't be so depressed in the sequel but instead will turn his negative emotions into motivation to help take down Kylo Ren and the rest of the First Order. The director went on to talk about how Chewie would be emotionally suffering more if he had nothing to do:

"If Chewie was just unemployed and sitting at home, things might be a little rougher, but he's got a task to focus on."

Regarding Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o), Johsnon revealed that she will have a smaller role in the sequel.

"She has a smaller part in this than she has in
The Force Awakens
, but it's a really fun part, and Lupita is so awesome. I'm just happy I got to work with her."
"This was my first time working with mo-cap characters and working with actors in that way. I feel like I got such an incredible education watching Lupita work."

It would be cool to see Maz in action. She originally had an action sequence in The Force Awakens but that scene was ultimately deleted. If that "fun" moment involves her fighting the First Order troopers, it would be an appearance worthy of seeing no matter how brief.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to release in theaters on December 15, 2017.
