Rian Johnson Says The Last Jedi Won’t Make Any References To Donald Trump

The Star Wars franchise may be littered with political allegories; however it seems like The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has opted to refrain from instilling allusions to modern political events and figureheads in the upcoming sequel to The Force Awakens.

Speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson has discussed the things that would and would not make it into The Last Jedi and it seems like undisguised allusions to US President Donald Trump won't be one of them.

"To me, the power is greatly diminished if suddenly you have a character stand up in front of the Imperial Senate who has orange hair and is saying, ‘Let's make the galaxy great again,'" Johnson said. "It just cheapens it all and divides the audience. What actually matters, and what these films can actually speak to, are the fundamental building blocks of what makes people good, what makes people brave, what are the things we should be fighting for."

The Star Wars franchise doesn't really have to make an overt references to current political events to teach people what's right and wrong. It's good to hear that Johnson is taking a more subtle approach on the political and moral teachings of The Last Jedi.

Featuring Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o, Benicio Del Toro, Kelly Marie Tran, and Laura Dern, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to premiere on December 15, 2017.
