Rian Johnson Reveals The Films That Inspired Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Lucasfilm has been keeping Star Wars: The Last Jedi's secrets close to its chest, but now that the sequel trilogy installment is fast approaching its premiere, the studio's been open to sharing more details about The Force Awakens sequel.

Sitting down with Screen Rant, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has decided to reveal the different films that influenced the way he developed his Star Wars movie.

"I picked a bunch of films and Twelve O'Clock High, which is one of the Great World War II movies with Gregory Peck. There's some direct inspiration from that in the film, but also we watch some samurai films. We watch some, you know, Bridge On The River Kwai. We watched Gunga Din. We watch a bunch of, kind of adventure films."

Johnson's selection isn't all that strange. All of the films that Johnson used as basis for working on The Last Jedi feature a tight-knit group of upright characters going head to head against villainous opposition – the elements that make a classic Star Wars movie. They also follow well-rounded characters with an ensemble cast, a set up that reminds one of the sequel trilogy's Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaacs) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver.) It's a pretty solid pick.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
