Rian Johnson Open To The Return Of Old Star Wars Characters Like Jar Jar Binks In New Trilogy

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson might not be interested in adding elements of the Old Republic to the new Star Wars trilogy that Lucasfilm has assigned to him, but it seems like the filmmaker's open to the return of some old prequel trilogy characters, including Jar Jar Binks.

The new trilogy is still in its earliest stages of conception, and Johnson tells Yahoo! that he still isn't exactly sure what kind of elements he'd incorporate in the next chapter of the Star Wars franchise and that he's open to any kind of possibility. During the interview with the publication, Johnson was asked whether old Star Wars characters could make a return in his new trilogy, and the director seemed pretty down with it.

"I'm just starting to think about it, and get into, so who knows?" Johnson went on to say. "I want to keep it just totally wide open in terms of possibilities. That's what's so exciting about it right now, just the notion of one story, three movies, the sky's the limit. We can really do anything. The possibilities are thrilling."

The publication also asked whether the filmmaker would even consider bringing back Jar Jar Binks.

"I would be down with bringing old Jar Jar back — we'll see," Johnson said, laughing.

This response would drive fans wild (not having the Old Republic is upsetting enough) but we know that Johnson's better than this. The Last Jedi director wouldn't go as far as adding Jar Jar Binks in his new trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
