Rian Johnson On How The Last Jedi Prepared Him For The New Star Wars Trilogy

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have ended up being a pretty divisive sequel trilogy installment amongst regular audiences, however, The Force Awakens has been nothing but a commercial and critical success.

Now as the film continues its cinematic run, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson talks about how the film has helped him prepare for the new Star Wars trilogy that's coming out after Episode IX.

Lucasfilm has been so happy with Johnson's work, they decided to give him the entire trilogy after the Star Wars sequel trilogy films. Speaking in an interview with Cinema Blend, Johnson discusses the learning curve, saying that he feels good now that he's familiarized himself a bit better with the Star Wars machine.

"There were so many things that were new to me, in terms of process with this. Everything from working with pre-vis for the first time to working with the heads of departments. It was a smooth process. It felt oddly comfortable, but a lot of it was new, so there was a learning curve. It will be nice coming into the next one, knowing a little bit better how a machine this big works. It was such an unknown to me, whether the size of this and the scope of it would make it a different thing than I previously knew how to do. Now that I know that's not the case, I feel like I can come into it a little bit more without the trepidation of, 'Am I going to know how to do this?' which feels good."

Though it seems like some Star Wars fans aren't that into The Last Jedi, it's hard to deny that Johnson's Star Wars movie helped expand the franchise. Not only did the filmmaker create new planets and new creatures, he also wrote a script that helped take the franchise to new directions.

We definitely can't wait to hear what Johnson has in store for us after Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
