Rian Johnson Made His New Trilogy Pitch So He Can Keep Working With Lucasfilm And Disney

Rian Johnson is one hot director right now, what with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi getting nothing but positive reviews and praise. Lucasfilm has also hired him to work on his own Star Wars trilogy set apart from the Skywalkers, and Johnson talks about his pitch to the higher-ups that got him the job.

Talking to SlashFilm, Johnson explained:

"No. It came about because we were getting to the end of making this and again, I knew I wasn't doing the next one. And I had had a really good time not just making this movie, but working with Kathy and also working with Disney, working with Bob Iger, Alan Horn, and Alan Berg. And we just had just a really good experience. And we were all…it was like last week of senior year. We were cleaning out our lockers. And all getting kind of sad. And saying, how do we keep working together? And that I threw out, I said, the most interesting thing to me would be a new trilogy, one story told over three movies. Go new places, meet new folks, come up with a new story to tell in the Star Wars universe. The sky's the limit. That sounds thrilling. And they really responded to that. So we're off, yeah."

Granted Rian Johnson is one of the few directors that Lucasfilm is actually happy to have worked with. This year saw the studio fire three of their previously hired directors from their projects; Johnson is the only one to walk out of his movie without any drama, and he even has his own trilogy to start as well.

We have no idea where Johnson's Star Wars trilogy is set, but he has confirmed that he doesn't want it set in the Old Republic era. Hopefully it's something pretty great; good thing Johnson has more than three years to develop the film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
