Rian Johnson Explains Why Luke (Spoiler) His Lightsaber In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might be enjoying commercial and critical success, however some fans have been busy complaining to no end about the changes the film brings to the Star Wars franchise.

One of the changes that has been getting fan's cloaks into notes is the first scene where we get to see Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker. The Jedi appears not a few moments after the very end of The Force Awakens, and right after receiving his old lightsaber from Rey, Luke decides to toss the old weapon over his shoulder.

While some fans found the scene funny, other fans ust couldn't understand why Luke would toss his old lightsaber away. However, speaking in an interview with Collider, Rian Johnson does his very best to break down Luke's opening sequence in The Last Jedi, saying that the lightsaber toss was the only "honest" reaction he thought Luke could have.

"So, that leads you down a really specific path in terms of where his head is at. And if he's done that and if he's made this huge Herculean effort to pull himself out of the fight, to hide in, like he says, ‘The most unfindable place in the galaxy,' it took an entire movie for the most heroic, smartest people in the galaxy to even find him, he's put himself away. Then some kid shows up that he doesn't know and shoves this thing that is everything that he has made this huge effort to step away from into his face with this look in her eyes of expectation like, ‘Here you go,' and what is he going to do? Take it and say, ‘Great. Let's go save the galaxy.' He's made this choice. He's there for a reason. I knew it was going to be shocking, but I did it because it felt like, obviously it's a dramatic expression of it, but it's an expression of honestly the way that he is going to react to that moment."

Johnson makes senses. It wouldn't seem realistic to have an overly-eager Jedi master in The Last Jedi, not after The Force Awakens leaves saying that Luke's been hiding away from the Resistance and everyone else for years. It can't be that easy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
