Red Sonja Movie In The Works, Thanks To Wonder Woman's Success

There's no doubt that the success of Wonder Woman has changed how Hollywood views female superhero movies. Prior to the success of the DC film, movies with female heroes had a certain stigma to them, thanks to critical and commercial failures like Catwoman, Elektra, and Tank Girl. Now that Wonder Woman has shown a better way to use female heroes, Millennium Films is hoping to replicate the same success with another hero: Red Sonja.

According to Deadline, Millennium has fast-tracked the film based on the heroine, after waiting for an opportune time to reintroduce Sonja to modern audiences. Aside from a 1985 film starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonja hasn't really appeared in any other form of media outside of the current Dynamite Comics. It will be interesting to see how Millennium adapts the character to the big screen,

While no release date was revealed, the Red Sonja film will be produced by Millennium's Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta alongside Cinelou's Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon. "We have been waiting for the right time for this remake," said Lerner, "and with the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken. They want female heroes."

Only time will tell if Red Sonja is anywhere as successful as Wonder Woman, but it's good seeing more female heroes hit the big screen. The film will be different from the 1985 film, introducing new concepts and characters. Millennium is currently fast-tracking the movie and is in the process of hiring a writer.
