Ready Player One Author Ernie Cline Confirms He's Writing A Sequel

Author Ernie Cline has just confirmed that he's writing a sequel to his best-selling science fiction novel, Ready Player One.

The new trailer for Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Cline's novel was just released last weekend, and as fans are still breaking down the Easter eggs and references from the trailer, Cline revealed in a Facebook Live steam on Sunday that he's been writing the sequel to Ready Player One, confirming that the rumors of it are "true".

Cline declined to reveal details about the sequel. "I can't talk about it too much," Cline said. "But there's no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they've already worked on when they're watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life."

Since the first novel had a good closure at the end, Cline's confirmation may surprise some fans who believe that there's nothing more to Wade's story, but I actually predicted that there will be a sequel. There's a huge fanbase for Cline's sci-fi franchise, and it would be such a waste if he didn't write a sequel to it. I just hope that it won't be just for the sake of making more money. I expect that the sequel would have more reference in this decade's pop culture, and the book will probably be titled Ready Player Two.

Synopsis:

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery, and danger..

Ready Player One hits theaters March 30, 2018.
